The One Ocean Hub is an independent programme for collaborative research for development, funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) through the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). GCRF is a key component in delivering the UK AID strategy and puts UK-led research at the heart of efforts to tackle the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The Hub is a community of scholars from 22 leading international Universities and Research Centres from the UK, South Africa, Ghana, Namibia, Kenya, the South Pacific and the Caribbean. The Hub is led and hosted by the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK.

The One Ocean Hub aims to transform our response to the urgent challenges facing our ocean. Its research seeks to bridge current disconnections in law, science and policy and integrate governance frameworks to balance multiple ocean uses with conservation. It strives to empower the communities, women and children, most reliant upon the oceans to inform decisions based on multiple values and knowledge systems.
SOUTH AFRICAN HUB WORK
With a coastline that stretches some 3000km, together with the Prince Edward Islands, South Africa brings together 3 ocean basins and holds a deep relationship with, and reliance on, the ocean. The country’s team of 23 researchers are investigating four interlinked themes of knowledge, policy, legislative reform and the democratisation of benefits in ocean management.

Bringing together legal, ethical and environmental dimensions with human emotional and sensory engagement, the research seeks to examine, from new perspectives, issues such as the impacts of marine and coastal mining, transparency of the inshore coastal recreational fisheries and fisheries management. ​
